Debate

Bishop Ryan's Model United Nations: World Issues & Social Justice Club consists not only of its primary purpose but also of two sub-teams, one of which is our Debate Team. Whether it is against our fellow Catholic schools, on the provincial stage, or even within our club, our debates tackle the topics many do not want to talk about.

We believe discussing important issues and injustices is very important, but sometimes, we cannot all come to a consensus on a particular idea. Respectfully sharing ideas and arguing with each other educates both sides on the opposition and may influence one's opinion on a situation. It was Elie Wiesel who famously said, "We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented," and that is one of the reasons why we debate, why we take sides, and why we fight for our beliefs.

It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it.

Colin Powell

Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers, who can cut through argument, debate and doubt, to offer a solution everybody can understand.

Charles de Gaulle

The leader must aim high, see big, judge widely, thus setting himself apart form the ordinary people who debate in narrow confines.
